How Do I Get My Business Mentioned in ChatGPT?
Submit to Bing (ChatGPT indexes from Bing, not Google), build brand mentions (0.664 correlation with citation), create YouTube content, structure content with answer capsules, and allow GPTBot in robots.txt.
To get mentioned in ChatGPT: submit your site to Bing (ChatGPT indexes from Bing, not Google), build brand mentions across the web (0.664 correlation with AI citation), create YouTube content (0.737 correlation), structure content with clear answer capsules, and allow GPTBot plus OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt. Bing submission is the most overlooked step.
Step 1: Submit to Bing Webmaster Tools
This is the single most important step that most businesses skip. ChatGPT's search feature (SearchGPT) pulls from Bing's index, not Google's. If your site isn't properly indexed in Bing, ChatGPT simply can't find you. Go to bing.com/webmasters, verify your site, and submit your sitemap. Most UK businesses have never done this.
Step 2: Allow AI crawlers
ChatGPT uses three crawlers, and you need to allow all of them:
- GPTBot — collects training data
- OAI-SearchBot — indexes content for real-time ChatGPT search results
- ChatGPT-User — allows ChatGPT to visit your site when users ask it to
Check your robots.txt configuration to make sure none of these are blocked. 23% of UK websites block at least one AI crawler, often without realising it.
Step 3: Build brand authority signals
ChatGPT recommends brands it considers authoritative. The strongest correlation factors from research:
| Signal | Correlation with AI citation |
|---|---|
| YouTube presence | 0.737 |
| Brand mentions across web | 0.664 |
| Wikipedia/Wikidata presence | 0.550 |
| Number of referring domains | 0.510 |
| Domain authority | 0.480 |
YouTube has the strongest correlation. If you produce video content, this directly increases your likelihood of being cited by ChatGPT and Gemini.
Step 4: Structure content for extraction
ChatGPT needs content it can cleanly extract and quote. This means:
- Lead with the answer — put your definitive answer in the first paragraph, not buried in the middle
- Use clear H1 and H2 tags — state what the page is about in plain language
- Include data and specifics — AI prefers citing content with concrete numbers over vague claims
- Add schema markup — FAQPage, Organisation, and Article schema help AI understand your content
Step 5: Monitor and iterate
Test regularly by asking ChatGPT questions your customers would ask. Note which competitors appear and what content they have that you don't. AI visibility builds over time as your brand signals strengthen and your content gets crawled repeatedly.
