AI Visibility Score - What It Means and How to Improve
An AI visibility score measures how well AI platforms can find and recommend your business. What it means and how to improve yours.
An AI visibility score measures how likely AI platforms are to mention and recommend your business. It combines factors like schema markup, brand mentions, content freshness, and crawlability into a single number. Most UK businesses score poorly because they have optimised for Google rankings but never tested their AI presence.
What an AI visibility score measures
Different tools calculate scores differently, but they all assess the same core question: can AI platforms find you, understand you, and trust you enough to recommend you?
The main factors include:
- Platform presence - do you appear in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and others?
- Accuracy - when you do appear, is the information correct?
- Frequency - how often do you get mentioned relative to competitors?
- Sentiment - are the mentions positive, neutral, or negative?
How different tools calculate it
Several AI search tools now offer visibility scoring. Otterly tracks mentions across platforms over time. Peec AI provides a real-time visibility assessment. Semrush has added AI visibility metrics to its existing platform. Each uses slightly different methodology, but the core concept is the same.
What a good score looks like
There is no universal benchmark yet because AI visibility scoring is still new. However, if your business appears in at least 3 out of 6 AI platforms for your primary keywords, you are ahead of most competitors. If you appear in none, you have significant work to do.
How to improve your score
Add schema markup
FAQPage schema alone can boost AI visibility by up to 350%. Organisation, LocalBusiness, and Product schema all help AI platforms understand what you offer. 44% of UK businesses have no schema at all.
Build brand mentions
Brand mentions across the web have a 0.664 correlation with AI citations. Get mentioned on industry sites, review platforms, directories, and YouTube. YouTube mentions have the strongest single correlation at 0.737.
Keep content fresh
76% of pages cited by AI platforms were updated within the last 30 days. Outdated content gets deprioritised. Set a monthly review schedule for your most important pages.
Fix technical issues
Unblock AI crawlers in robots.txt. Make sure your H1 clearly states what the page is about. Ensure your site loads quickly and renders properly without JavaScript.
