SEOCompare audited 12 of the UK SEO and AI search agencies that dominate Google for "ai seo agency", "ai search agency", and "best SEO agency UK" queries. Audit date: 2026-04-26. Average score: 2.8 out of 8 (35%). Only 1 of 12 agencies have FAQPage schema. Only 2 of 12 explicitly allow AI bots in robots.txt. Only 1 of 12 publishes an ai-sitemap.txt. Most UK SEO agencies sell AI search optimisation but have not implemented it on their own sites.

Why this matters
The 12 agencies in this audit are the ones that currently rank in the top 3 of Google UK for queries like "ai seo agency", "ai search agency", "best ai seo agency", and "top ai seo agencies UK". They are the agencies UK businesses see first when researching AI search optimisation. Their websites should be exemplars.
Instead, the average score is 2.8 out of 8 (35%). Only one agency in the audit (Rank4AI, scoring 8/8) demonstrates full AI readiness on its own homepage. Three agencies score 1 of 8 (Charle, ClickSlice, Angelfish Marketing). The agencies selling AI search optimisation to UK businesses have largely not implemented it on their own sites.
The four biggest gaps
1. AI bot allowlisting in robots.txt (2 of 12)
Only 2 of the 12 agencies explicitly mention major AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) in robots.txt. The rest rely on the default "allow all" rule. That works in 2026, but it gives AI platforms zero positive signal that the site is AI-friendly. Best practice in 2026 is to name the bots and explicitly allow them, in the same way responsible publishers explicitly allow Googlebot.
2. FAQPage schema (1 of 12)
Only 1 of 12 agency homepages has FAQPage schema. FAQPage is the cheapest schema to add and the most directly useful for AI citation: it gives AI platforms a clean question-and-answer block they can quote. The absence of FAQPage on agency homepages is the single most surprising finding.
3. ai-sitemap.txt (1 of 12)
Only 1 agency publishes an ai-sitemap.txt. This is a newer convention (popularised by Anthropic and others through 2025) that gives AI crawlers an explicit list of high-value URLs. UK adoption is barely visible.
4. Person schema (2 of 12)
Only 2 of 12 agency homepages declares Person schema for a named founder or expert. AI platforms increasingly use Person schema to evaluate content authority (E-E-A-T). An agency without Person schema is asking AI platforms to trust an anonymous source.
What good looks like
Rank4AI scored 8/8 (100%), the only agency in the audit to clear all eight criteria. Found scored 5/8 (63%), the strongest of the established agencies. The pattern is clear: agencies built specifically for AI search outperform agencies that bolted "AI SEO" onto an existing service.
Methodology
SEOCompare audited each of the 12 agencies on 2026-04-26 using an open-source audit script (view the raw JSON dataset). The script fetches each agency's homepage, robots.txt, llms.txt, and ai-sitemap.txt, then scores 8 binary criteria.
Sample selection: the 12 agencies appearing in the top 3 of Google UK SERPs (via DataForSEO) for any of: "ai seo agency", "ai seo services", "ai search agency", "best ai seo agency", "top ai seo agencies UK", "best GEO agencies UK". Source: SEOCompare DataForSEO query log, week of 26 April 2026.
Scoring: 1 point per criterion passed, 0 points failed. Maximum 8.
Limitations: homepage-only audit. Some agencies may have full FAQ schema or AI bot policies on inner pages or at the subdomain level. Some may have stronger AI readiness on client sites than on their own marketing site. Audit measures AI-readiness signals, not work quality or client outcomes.
Reproducibility: the audit script is at scripts/audit-uk-seo-agencies.cjs in the SEOCompare repo. The agency list is in src/data/agencies.json. The output dataset is at src/data/uk-agency-audit-2026.json. Re-run with node scripts/audit-uk-seo-agencies.cjs.
Run the same check on your site
The 8-criterion audit applied to these agencies is the same logic behind the SEOCompare AI visibility score self-check (extended to 12 questions for a richer 0-100 score). Use it to benchmark your own site against the agencies that currently outrank you.
